THE FOUR BURNER ANALOGY
It’s this idea of trade-offs. We all have to make these decisions. We want a life without trade-offs, but there are constraints that we all face. I think there are three main ways that we can attack the central problem that life has trade-offs. The four burner theory is a way to think about work/life balance. The concept, originally from David Sedaris, is that there are four major burners ion our lives – our family, our friends, our work, and our health. In order to be successful, the theory says you can only have three of the four burners on at one time. In order to be very successful, you can only have two of the four burners on.
